Do you know a Canine Kingdom Hero Dog?

hero-dogs
Canine Kingdom Hero Dogs come in all different forms.  There is Tsunami, the world famous hero dog, who was one of the first volunteer Search and Rescue dogs on the scene at the World Trade Center in NYC following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. She and her handler Hal Wilson scaled the burning wreckage searching for victims. Then there is Bailey. Born at a puppy mill, sent to a pet shop where he spent the first 6 months of his life, only to be bounced around  8 different homes thereafter. He was cast aside, crated for 10 hours a day, and deemed untrainable. His coat was a matted, the muscles in his legs had atrophied. He had been rejected by everyone who had ever known him, but he kept the faith.  He was finally adopted by Mary Beth Close, the founder of this site. He was house trained in less than three weeks, was never again confined in a crate, and after months of short walks, Bailey regained his muscle tone and his spirit.  Today he is a beloved family dog who brings smiles to everyone who meets him. A true hero.

Our Featured Hero Dog!
FOR five years he truly was man’s best friend, never leaving the side of British troops as they hunted down Taliban killers. Tangye the labrador dodged bombs and bullets on patrol with soldiers in Afghanistan. But the loyalty of this real-life dog of war meant he risked being killed by a landmine or even targeted by Taliban snipers in an effort to crush British morale.

Described by the troops as “fearless under fire”, he has been living with C Company, 3rd Battalion The Rifles since being bought from an Afghan family as a puppy by one of the British soldiers.

Tangye soon became a mascot and source of morale, but, with a surge in the number of improvised explosive devices, the troops feared it was too dangerous for him to continue.

Lance Corporal Brent Meheux said: “When the lads were under contact he would run up and down the line barking and wagging his tail. It was as if he was shouting encouragement.”

And a spokesperson for 3rd Battalion added: “He probably completed more patrols than even the most experienced soldier.” But Tangye would run ahead of the patrols and they were afraid he would step on an IED.

Charity worker Jean Henman, 58, who will be seeking a new home for the black lab, said: “The war was just a game to him. He’s the kind of dog that would run and pick up your grenade if you threw it and bring it back.”
