(ALBANY, NY) While dogs can be our best friend, they can also be our most daunting challenge when left unattended or without companionship. What dogs see as boredom, people see as destruction, and inadvertent though it may be, the misunderstanding has spelled the end for many a relationship. Now, www.caninekingdom.com offers an e-book of time-tested recommendations to help your dog’s home-alone time to be as healthy and productive as it can be. “In my research of dog parents, one of the biggest problems I see is what to do about your dog when you have to go to work,” says Canine Kingdom founder Mary Beth Close, “from guilt about leaving to concern about possible destruction, this is a long-standing issue. In our e-book we offer ideas to minimize anxiety and keep your dog entertained during your time away from home.” Some of the topics covered in the e-book include: Environment Entertainment How to manage caregivers Avoiding and dealing with destruction “Fortunately this is an area where many experts agree,” says Close. “In circumstances where they don’t, we outline the arguments and invite feedback to help us evaluate ongoing challenges in the dog world.” Canine Kingdom was launched last year to…

There are few things more frustrating than having a cat that is suffering from issues that keep them from jumping. When we think about our beloved felines, we think of animals that can run and jump with ease. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. While there are many conditions that affect a cat's mobility, the two most common are arthritis and a condition called neuropathy.

As much as people regret it, a dog is often alone in a house or apartment for hours at a time. This can lead to boredom, and boredom can lead to mischievous and even destructive behavior. Idleness can also produce the kind of couch potato syndrome we see in people. Dogs that are thinking and working, in our opinion, are likely to live healthier, happier lives, be prone to less stress, and make better companions.

I had a client whose dog had been locked up in the backyard with almost no attention for 3 years. The poor dog was chewing her paws apart, at a clinical OCD (obsessive/compulsive disorder) level. The parent had tried everything to distract and deter the dog from mutilating herself, but the dog's stress level was just too high. Her feet were bloody and wrapped in white bandages when I was called in to help. Dr. Ian Dunbar provided counsel on this difficult case. He prescribed 5 large frozen Kongs a day. Soon, the dog was expending enough energy through the Kongs. This, together with the love of the dog parent enabled the dog to overcome her severe isolation response and live a healthy normal life.
